Across Europe, civil society organisations face growing restrictions, often justified as measures to “protect democracy”. Based on recent research with Swedish civil society leaders, this session, led by AWoN member, researcher and deacon Anna Ardin, reveals how negative labelling – such as being branded “extremist” or “undemocratic” – operates as a tool for exclusion, discouraging participation and reshaping the boundaries of legitimate democratic engagement.
Participants will gain insights into recognising these mechanisms, understanding their impact on trust and pluralism, and exploring strategies to defend civic space and human rights in increasingly polarised contexts.
Anna Ardin is a researcher and deacon with long experience from the Swedish civil society, including leadership roles in faith-based and rights-based organisations. Her current research explores how discursive labelling – such as being branded “extremist” – shapes the space for democratic participation.
