‘Building a movement’- our Director’s note, October 2025

Were you torn too, this summer, between posting happy, relaxed, summer pictures, and sharing the dreadful news coming from Gaza and the Westbank, or Ukraine, or from new inhumane policies in the country you come from?

Do you have something like AWoN in your country? Are you part of a multi-faith (and wider), a cross-sectoral, family of practitioners? The AWoN Practitioners are singing the praises of the European network, especially after the Annual Summit, such an important time. But what about the national level? It’s our goal and our hope to create and nurture national AWoN-like networks – where we feel at home, that feel like family.

It’s not easy – and much needed. It’s not easy because we fight often with our peers in the same sector for the same money. We have history with each other, we might not always like each other. And there’s a risk involved. Now, politics are growing worse and worse for people on the move and the receiving part of our society, we need each other. We, people who believe in a diverse and welcoming Europe, should be a force to reckon with. And we are, but we are also easily divided. And who benefits from that division? It’s not Europe, nor the person on the move.

So we have set ourselves to a task. To find a way to grow grassroots a network like AWoN. Crossing the sectors of work in migration and the cultures and religions we come from. Building a movement, a Practitioners Workers Union’ it might be – that nurtures our strengths, that builds our capacity and professionality and cares for courageous people like you all and for a welcoming Europe.
